On the road to autonomy

As one of the largest global automakers, we’re constantly redefining the driving experience. And now, we’re aiming to lead transportation’s next big shift – autonomy.

Self-driving technology will transform the driving experience for everyone.  We’re building a future where autonomous vehicles are designed to help give precious time back to people and make driving safer, easier, and more enjoyable.

How we’ll reach autonomy

Driver assistance

For over a decade, our driver assistance technology has supported drivers in performing singular driving tasks. Features like Adaptive Cruise Control2 give assistance accelerating and braking to help deliver a comfortable drive.

Hands-free

Introduced in 2017 as the first truly hands-free Advanced Driver Assistance System, Super Cruise3 allows drivers to remove their hands from the wheel and feet from the pedals while maintaining control of the vehicle under proper conditions, which can help make driving more enjoyable.

Eyes-off

In the near future, we plan to introduce technology that not only lets drivers take their hands off the wheel when conditions allow but also take their eyes off the road. While a driver must remain alert to take back control of the vehicle if requested, this future technology will allow for a more enjoyable commute and mark a significant step towards enhanced autonomy.

Full autonomy

Our ultimate goal is to develop the ability for vehicles to navigate complex environments without human oversight. We expect that this will allow for drivers to catch up on email, read a book or just get time back while on the road.

GM has long been defined by innovation at massive scale with products you can trust. Our work in autonomy builds on that legacy to deliver safe, intuitive, self-driving technology to millions around the world.”

How does Super Cruise work?

Driver assistance technology didn’t arrive through just one breakthrough. It takes a network of cutting-edge technologies to give you a seamless and hands-free experience.

Maintain a driver-selected following distance with automatic acceleration and braking

Adaptive Cruise Control2 uses forward-looking cameras and radar sensors to keep your vehicle a set distance behind the vehicle in front of you, adapting to changes in traffic speed.

Experience a smooth, no touch experience with automated lane changing

A Super Cruise-enabled vehicle can make hands-free lane changes automatically7 when a slower vehicle is detected, or when prompted by the driver with a turn signal.

Stay confidently in the center

To ensure constant lane centering, a series of cameras, sensors, and LiDAR map data is used to identify lane markings and keep you within them.
